This is a catalogue that I designed for Ross Ryan’s exhibition, Crinan to Catterline, at the Scottish Gallery, Edinburgh, from 1 to 24 September 2022.
Ross Ryan’s artistic practice combines his intimate knowledge and understanding of the west coast of Scotland, his life as a professional skipper and his dedication as an artist. In 2021, Ross sailed the longest passage he has made on his boat, Sgarbh, to date; his intention was to record his journey between his home in Crinan to Catterline.
In this catalogue, alongside the works created on the voyage, the artist lays bare the weather conditions, his encounters with people, the places, the difficulties, the triumphs – of sometimes feeling alone, of feeling small, whilst feeling an intense wonder at the landscape from sea or land.
I created a palette of colours drawn from the artist's work to differentiate the different levels of information in the book – paintings and drawings, diary entries, photographs, and ephemera – alongside two typefaces, Bookmania and Columbia Titling, to create a hierarchy of information. I made full use of with the way that the quirky details in Columbia Titling are revealed when it is displayed at a larger scale, details that carry associations of the hand-painted names found on boats without being overly ‘nautical’.
The front and back cover feature a full bleed wraparound detail of Ryan’s painting, Storm Arwen, Catterline, 27/11/21, a favourite of the directors of the gallery; the title is set in different weights and sizes of Columbia Titling and is centred in a block, giving a taste of the layout inside. The inside cover features a plan of the Sgarbh, from The Motor Boat and Yachting magazine, October 1948, taken from the artist’s archive.
From the Archive: Platform Posters, 2020
Platform is the Edinburgh Art Festival’s annual showcase supporting artists in the early stages of their careers to make and present new work. This series of posters was displayed around the city, and are 1016mm x 1524mm and were printed by JackArts. Each poster follows the same template with an image from the four participating artists: Mark Bleakley, Rabindranath A Bhose, Rhona Jack and Susannah Stark.

Now in its 8th year, Platform: 2022 offers audiences an opportunity to experience the breadth and vitality of emerging contemporary art practice in Scotland. Platform: 2022 has been selected by writer and researcher Seán Elder, artist Lucy Skaer, and Director of Dundee Contemporary Arts, Beth Bate. The 2022 edition, curated by Laura McSorley, brings together new work by Saoirse Amira Anis, Emelia Kerr Beale, Lynsey MacKenzie and Jonny Walker.
The cover design includes circles taken from the colon that appears in the Platform: 2022 logo with imagery selected from one of the four artists, in this instance, the work of Lynsey MacKenzie. The leaflet is typeset in two typefaces, Freight Sans Pro and Adelle Sans, selected for their character and readability. The layout follows the design of previous iterations but, for this edition, has been adapted to include different types of information including a glossary of terms.

Printed matter that I designed for the Edinburgh Art Festival Commissions Programme 2022 interpretation material. Consisting of one booklet and three leaflets, it was designed to present a cohesive identity for the commissions programme, with a common typographic stye and layout as well as a colour, taken from the EAF programme guide, which I also worked on.
I used different weights of Proxima Nova to create a hierarchy of information in a layout that is adaptable to the different content for each leaflet. Full bleed images from each commission have been used to create impact on the cover. The leaflets (for Community Wellbeing Collective, Nadia Myre, and Pester and Rossi) are 8 page double-gatefolds, folded to 165mm x 210mm while the Channels booklet is 24 pages plus cover, trimmed to the same size – this is the size of the books, booklets, and leaflets that I have designed for EAF in previous years, building a connected set of print that documents the Edinburgh Art Festival’s growing series of artists’ commissions.
