Sarah Knox Exhibition Poster and Invitation

The artist Sarah Knox asked me to design a poster and invitation for her exhibition at the Dundas Street Gallery in Edinburgh. Sarah supplied a selection of images for use and I created a simple layout featuring one of Sarah’s paintings and typeset in Minion Pro. The poster was adapted for two different poster formats and for social media. The same layout was used for a double-sided invitation which included a full bleed detail of one of Sarah’s paintings on the reverse. I also designed exhibition labels as well as other gallery signage. The posters and invitations were printed by the Edinburgh Copyshop in St Mary’s Street. The exhibition runs from Wednesday 1 October to Sunday 5 October 2025.

The Improbable City is the second book that I designed for the Edinburgh Art Festival. The book accompanied a programme of commissions that ‘celebrate the work of visual artists who vividly conjure alternative imaginary worlds through their work, and considers how it is often the improbable which illuminates the real’. The programme included work by leading and emerging Scottish practitioners and includes new work by three international artists showing in the UK for the first time. The Improbable City ran from 30 July – 30 August 2015.

The cover of the book was printed on Colorplan Smoke Grey with a map of the old town of Edinburgh by Hanna Tuulikki. The book includes a glyph of a pointing hand on the title page to generate the feeling of a guide book or travel guide; I later learned that this symbol is known as a ‘manicule’ (from the Latin root manus for ‘hand’ and manicula for ‘little hand’) or fist.

The set of postcards was an attempt to include last-minute images of the installations that were being created specially for the Art Festival and that were still being made when the book had to go to print to meet the deadline of the opening of 29 July; as the postcards had a shorter production time we hoped to include images of the finished installations that were not ready in time for the book. The postcards slot in to pockets on the front and back cover.

There are eight postcards in the set with work by the seven artists featured in the exhibition – Charles Avery, Marvin Gaye Chetwynd, Julie Favreau, Emma Finn, Ariel Guzik, Kemang Wa Lehulere, and Hanna Tuulikki – as well as an eighth postcard by Neil Mulholland, which features a text written in response to Marvin Gaye Chetwynd's work. The reverse of the postcards featured another manicule and the legend ‘Postcard from the Improbable City’, further strengthening the idea of a book as a guide for visitors to ‘The Improbable City’.

Above are a series of iterations exploring ideas for the cover of the book which layer various glyphs with settings of the word ‘Improbable’ against backgrounds of different textured papers. The final design for the cover of the book was printed on Colorplan Smoke Grey with a map of the old town of Edinburgh by Hanna Tuulikki. The printed version of the book includes a glyph of a pointing hand on the title page to create the feeling of a guide book or travel guide; I later learned that this symbol is known as a ‘manicule’ (from the Latin root manus for ‘hand’ and manicula for ‘little hand’) or fist.

Wilhelmina Barns-Graham Trust Postcards

Here are two postcards that I designed for the Wilhelmina Barns-Graham Trust. The postcards are A6, 148 x 105mm, and were printed on a 350gsm recycled uncoated stock by Mixam. A modest job but good to work again with the Trust’s director, Rob Airey. Click here to see the book of poetry that I designed for the Trust in 2023.

Yale Representation Flyers

I was asked to design an A5 flyer for Yale Representation, specialists in selling books across the UK, to be inserted in the Yale Books Autumn Winter catalogue 2020, that would promote Yale Representation's services to bookshops and publishers. The flyer is double-sided with a photograph – taken by me – of a selection of books from publishers that Yale represent alongside text that I copy-edited from the Yale Representation website. I also came up with the straplines ‘Fantastic books from leading publishers’ and ‘Supporting Bookshops Promoting Publishers’. The flyer is set in the Yale typeface, an old style serif designed by Matthew Carter that was first released in 2004. The blue is adapted from the dark azure used in association with Yale University. The flyer was printed by 4-Print, a lithographic commercial printer in Surrey, on 100gsm uncoated paper – a nice contrast to the silk paper of the catalogue itself.

The Weaver's Apprentice Invitation

This is the invitation that I have designed for Dovecot's exhibition The Weaver's Apprentice. The card is A5, 148 x 210 mm, printed on Vision Superior, by Allander in Edinburgh. The image on the front of the card is a detail of weavers' initials from a tapestry created at Dovecot in 1924, Lord of the Hunt, by William Skeoch Cumming. This image is also used on the poster and banner that I have designed. The image of the tapestry has translated well in to print – tapestries often do, it's something about the relationship between stitches and pixels, I think – and, of course, it's a great photograph, taken by Antonia Reeve. The texture of the paper has given the image a tactile quality with the ink saturating the uncoated paper – I think it will look very handsome on the mantelpiece!

As well as an invitation card, I have also designed a four page A5 leaflet for the events programme that accompanies the exhibition. The image on this is of some of the original Dovecot apprentices from the Dovecot archives.

Dovecot Venue Hire Brochure

Dovecot Venue Hire Brochure

Designed by James Brook for Dovecot Studios, 2016

Booklet | 210 x 148 mm | 8 pages with 6 postcards, each 205 x 143 mm
Printed by Allander, Edinburgh, on Vision Superior 200gsm

Following on from the material I designed for Dovecot Gallery, Dovecot Studios asked me to design a suite of items to promote Dovecot Venue Hire. The brief was to create a distinct and discrete identity for the Venue Hire enterprise but which still retained a visual connection to the main Dovecot identity that I had developed. I devised a coloured circle with a type treatment (Dovecot's 'official' typeface, Whitney, in italic and two different weights) that was adaptable and would work across all of the different items required, drawing them together as a cohesive set that was visually distinctive and eye-catching. Each item had typographic elements and layout that made them work as a cohesive set and that echoed some elements of the design of the What's On guide.

There were several items in the brief, some of which were only available as PDFs that were emailed to prospective customers and some that were digitally printed 'on demand'. This is the Venue Hire brochure, an eight page A5 booklet with a set of six postcards that included rates for the individual spaces in the building. It was printed on Vision Superior to match the What's On guide, but with 200gsm throughout to convey a feel of 'quality'. In addition, I designed theme brochures for weddings, Christmas, conferences, as well as catering and suppliers information cards, thank-you cards, and roller banners for events.

The PDF-only material can be downloaded from Dovecot's website – click here

The postcards below were designed to be slightly smaller so that they fitted in the back of the Venue Hire brochure; they were printed in short runs so that the rates could be updated when necessary. Venue Hire packs could be customised with different rate cards based on the needs of the customers.
