Kwang Young Chun Poster

Kwang young Chun: Aggregations

Designed by James Brook for Dovecot Gallery, 2015

Poster | 850 x 620 mm

One of a pair of posters designed for Dovecot's 2015 Festival exhibition, which featured work by Korean artist Kwang Young Chun alongside the work of Serbian textile designer and painter, Bernat Klein. The poster follows the template that I established with my design for the Magne Furuholmen poster. It has an image in a panel running full width across the centre; all the textual information, logos etc, are contained in a panel at the bottom; the Dovecot Gallery logo is given emphasis by being placed on its own in a panel at the top; all other logos are arranged vertically on the right-hand side. I designed different type treatments for the titles of each exhibition; something I would develop further with subsequent exhibitions.

Postcards from 'The Improbable City'

It's been a busy week but I was excited to see the proofs for the 'Postcards from the Improbable City', which accompany the book that I have been designing for the Edinburgh Art Festival. Once printed, the postcards will slot in to pockets on the inside cover, strengthening the idea of a book as a guide for visitors to 'The Improbable City'.

There are eight postcards in the set with work by the seven artists featured in the exhibition - Charles Avery, Marvin Gaye Chetwynd, Julie Favreau, Emma Finn, Ariel Guzik, Kemang Wa Lehulere, and Hanna Tuulikki - as well as an eighth postcard by Neil Mulholland, which features a text written in response to Marvin Gaye Chetwynd's work.

I love this image by Marvin Gaye Chetwynd and I'm looking forward to seeing her performance and installation, The King Must Die at the opening on Thursday. The Improbable City runs from 30 July – 30 August 2015. More information can be found here.

Proofs of 'The Improbable City' Book

The proofs have arrived for The Improbable City, the book that I have been designing for this year's Edinburgh Art Festival. The book accompanies a programme of commissions that 'celebrates the work of visual artists who vividly conjure alternative imaginary worlds through their work, and considers how it is often the improbable which illuminates the real'. The programme includes work by leading and emerging Scottish practitioners and includes new work by 3 international artists showing in the UK for the first time. The Improbable City runs from 30 July – 30 August 2015.

Banners!

I've been busy designing new banners for Dovecot Gallery's forthcoming Edinburgh Art Festival exhibitions, which open at the end of July. The design for the banners has been developed from the visual identity and the template that I created for the banners for the Magne Furuholmen exhibition from earlier this year (below) and for the exhibition that followed it, Garry Fabian Miller (above), which ended this weekend. I've been very pleased to see these banners as I pass Infirmary Street but I'm now eager to see the banners I have designed for the Bernat Klein and Kwang Young Chun exhibitions when they appear, especially as they will also be appearing on a much larger scale on Chambers Street. Fingers crossed that the people at Dovecot are as pleased with the new banners as they have been with these two.

As with the Magne Furuholmen and Garry Fabian Miller exhibitions, I have also been designing invitations, posters, and leaflets for Dovecot's Edinburgh Art Festival exhibitions, as well as a re-design of Dovecot's What's On guide, which has just gone to print at Allander in Edinburgh. Looking forward to seeing this in a few weeks.
